Equality is everyone's issue in a fair and just society. One of the major barriers to equality is the existence of negative attitudes towards minority groups such as disabled people, older people, younger people, lesbians, gay men and bisexuals, and people from black and minority ethnic communities. Equality training is an effective way of challenging these negative attitudes and stereotypes in order to create a fair and inclusive society for all. Altering Attitudes is a new project funded by the European Commission (in response to Article 13 of the Amsterdam Treaty). The project is looking at a range of training methods and approaches used by equality trainers to tackle discrimination based on race, age, sexual orientation and disability with the aim of developing a new training programme which addresses several types of discrimination. The project partner organisations are based in Scotland, Wales, Finland, Italy and the Netherlands and all currently use a variety of training methods to challenge one or more types of discrimination. The project is running from December 2000 to November 2001.
